If you haven’t dipped into the wonderful world of sherries, ports and Madeiras, here’s a snapshot of what to try. These fortified wines are viscous wine-based delights made from adding additional alcohol during the fermentation process. They have long been enjoyed as a dessert wine option or as aperitifs.

The Manzanillas, premium and aged sherries produced by the Bodegas are seen as benchmarks of quality and style the world over.

Tasting Notes

Dry and refreshing, with apple, straw and nutty flavours underscored by a salty tanginess. Lightweight, subtle and balanced, this is the perfect introduction to sherry.

One of the best aperitifs served chilled in a wine glass and great with tapas.

Tasting Notes

Delicate nose combining fresh fruit fragrances with the mellow aromas and oak hints of a traditional white port. Fresh, lively palate, with good flavour and crisp, dry finish.

Serve chilled, maybe even over ice. The Portuguese drink ‘portonic’ which is a mix of equal parts of white port and tonic water, served with a squeeze of lemon or some mint to garnish.

A vintage port which harnesses the massive structure and powerful fruitiness of the 2009 harvest with elegance and poise.

Tasting Notes

Opens on concentrated black woodland fruit laced with raspberry and plum. Around this fruity core, is a complex aura of citrus fruit blossom and wild herbal scents of mint and lavender.

Enjoy it solo or try it with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton, where the piquancy of the cheese is perfectly matched by the powerful majestic flavours of the port.
