Brownsea Island Open Air Theatre

25/07/2018 - 10/08/2018

One of the biggest theatrical projects in the South, the annual production is set on The National Trust's Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, Dorset. These beautiful surroundings make for a wonderful show, and a fantastic evening of traditional Shakespeare.

Tickets for TITUS ANDRONICUS are £23 including return boat fare from Poole Quay.

Titus Andronicas – Shakespeare’s Revenge Tragedy

Titus Andronicus is a Roman general who returns to Rome from years of fighting a war as a hero. He is accompanied by four remaining sons and prisoners in the form of Tamora, Queen of the Goths, her three sons, and Aaron, who is later revealed as Tamora’s secret ‘lover’. Titus orders the slaughter of Tamora’s eldest son in revenge for the death of a number of his own in the wars.  From this point Tamora declares her hatred of the ‘Andronici’ clan and seeks revenge.

Titus refuses the offer to become the new emperor of Rome and supports the case of Saturnitus to become the Emperor instead, handing over all his prisoners to him. The foolish Saturnitus immediately makes Tamora his empress.

To get back at Titus, Tamora schemes with Aaron to have two of  Titus's sons framed for the murder of Bassianus, the emperor's brother. She also encourages her lustful sons Chiron and Demetrius to rape Titus's daughter Lavinia, after which they mutilate her hands and cut out her tongue so she cannot give them away.

After Titus’s two accused sons are executed and Titus discovers what has happened to Lavinia and who were responsible for her condition his personality intensifies to a perceived madness.

Seeking aid and revenge from the gods, Titus encounters Tamora and her sons, disguised as the gods of Revenge, Murder and Rape. Titus now seeks the ultimate revenge to rid the world of his enemies…
