With 45 square miles of un-spoilt coastlines, lush vegetation and magnificent walking trails along cliffs and inland valleys, Jersey has endless options to give your pooch walks, they’ll remember - at least until dinner time! Armed with his very own Gopro Camera, we took resident Good Times dog, Ralph, on some of the best walks Jersey has to offer.
Ralph hopped into the car with a wag of the tail, and off we went. Autumn is a great time to travel with your four-legged friend because from October, the restriction that requires dogs to be on leads is lifted. Not only that, the vast beaches are empty, and there’s sure to be plenty of rain-filled muddy puddles to jump in.
A salty swim at St Aubins Bay
We began at St. Aubins bay, which spans the central part of Jersey’s south coast and is a beautiful unbroken stretch of sand. The 3.5 mile walk along the entire length of the bay via a gentle seafront promenade, takes you from St. Helier to the stunning French influenced harbour of St Aubin. The large open beaches are perfect for stick throwing, sea swims and rolling in the white sands.
Chasing red squirrels in St Catherine’s Woods
For a muddier adventure, the beautiful St Catherine’s Woods are located on the East of the Island. The forest is a playground of babbling brooks, rope swings, ponds that are ideal for a dip and miles of winding pathways. Surrounding the woods lay a network of quiet country lanes named ‘Green Lanes’, which operate a speed limit of just 15mph to give pedestrians and 4-legged hikers priority over cars.
The coastal paths from Plémont to Greve de Lecq
Finally for a walk that will take your breath away, head to the north coast cliff paths. With spectacular views over the towering cliffs and wide open green areas for the dog; this is the perfect place to appreciate the natural splendour of the Jersey coastline. If you’re lucky and have a clear day you’ll easily spot Sark, and Guernsey on the horizon. However, this walk isn’t for the faint hearted - with steep climbs along the rugged coastline, you’ll be giving your calves quite a work out!
Need somewhere to stay with your dog?
There are a fair few hotels and B&B’s that will accept dogs. Try the 3 star Hotel Ambassadeur, which overlooks the clean and dog-friendly sandy sweep of St Clement’s Bay. For something a little more luxurious, dog friendly and recently re-furbished 4 star Hotel La Place, is set in the heart of Jersey’s network of tranquil ‘Green Lanes’ and is a short 10 minute walk from the picturesque harbour of St Aubin. It’s always best to call ahead to let the hotels know you’re bringing your dog.
Don’t want to have muddy paws in your car for the journey home?
