North Show and Battle of the Flowers

One of the biggest events in Guernsey, two days of family entertainment, including traditional agricultural, horticultural and craft categories. Entries are made for Guernsey cattle, goats and agricultural produce, and a few local devotees keep alive the horse drawn carriage classes. The Guernsey breed of cattle is of course well known far beyond the confines of the island. The event will climax with the famous 'Battle of the Flowers'- a classic island event with mobile floral floats competing to win the prestigious Prix D'Honneur. Until the early 1960's the parade of floats culminated in an actual battle when the floats were stripped, and competitors and spectators alike bombarded each other with the flowers. Over the years though, the battle became rather too excited. Sometimes not just the flowers were thrown! Nowadays the floats survive to take part in an illuminated parade in the evening, culminating in a firework display.
